Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to examine which are the preferences and perceptions oftourists who visit the Costa Brava, emphasising the weight of specific aspects of environmental quality on tourist's decisions and on the quality of tourist's experiences. The data were obtained from a survey carried out in summer 1999 in the Costa Brava. The conjoint analysis method allows us to determine how important low price, clean beaches and quiet environment might be. Multiple correspondence analysis and cluster analysis help us to establish tourist typologies according to willingness to pay for environmental quality, perceived environmental quality, environmental related activities done during the holiday and stated reasons of satisfaction. The findings suggest that the importance of environmental variables changes according to the different groups of tourists and that it is related to the selected destination.
